My Kobo ereaders and the Windows 10 Anniversary Update are at last on speaking terms.
After my Win 10 desktop updated last night, I fired up Adobe Digital Editions, and sure enough I could send files to my Kobo Aura One ereader, the new 7.8 incher. Same for my Aura H2O.
What’s more, as I’d expect now, File Explorer can recognize files on the Kobo.
Along the way, I did notice two issues:
- I can’t use the Kobo Desktop App to authorize Adobe DRM on the Aura One. Just a matter of an update at Kobo’s end? Or does this have to do with the fact I was sent a review unit (yes, I intend to buy it)? I’ll check.
- Calibre won’t recognize the Aura One as a device. I suspect that’s simply a driver issue, and that a solution from the Calibre end will be on the way. Calibre works fine with my H2O, and via a Kobo plugin, I can convert ePub files to the KePub format and adjust line spacing and enjoy other fun stuff that I can’t always do with the usual ePub. It’s a book by book thing.
- Remember, you can always use the Calibre wireless server to get books to Kobo devices, whether or not Microsoft sends additional update bugs our way.
I haven’t messed with other Kobo readers in regard to the fix, but if you have had Win 10 issues with those other devices, as I’d suspect, the problem should be gone.

I wasn’t able to connect to my Kobo Aura since I got the Windows 10 update on my laptop a week or so ago. No real problem since I still have an old XP netbook I can transfer to it, and I read more on my Kindle anyway.
Anyway I got another update last night and wondered if that would fix it but I didn’t check till I read this article. Sure enough it fixed it for the most part. I transferred a book just fine. Then, after properly disconnecting my Aura, it began it’s process of checking the library and locked up. I powered down and started it again and it’s just fine, as is the book I put on it. To check I plugged it in again, transferred another book to it and properly ejected it and it locked up again.
Restarting it fixed it again so it’s a minor issue but they still have some work to do on either the Windows or Kobo end.

@Barry: Thanks for the report. You’ll be glad to know that a new version of the Kobo app should come out very shortly. Ideally it’ll fix your problem. Perhaps you should alert Kobo about the glitch to make sure.

Well, I just got the updates installed. And the news is again good. Windows 10 with Anniversary Update… er, update now plays nice with my Aura HD. I was finally able to use ADE to transfer my library eBook to my reader. No problems here with lock ups.
Can’t really offer any opinion on other problems David encountered other than what I said elsewhere about Microsoft and Kobo both working on fixes. It looks as if the MS update was the primary fix with Kobo perhaps needing to clean up some loose ends.
Do we know if most or all of Kobo eReaders will get Overdrive integration? That would really be appreciated here. Our library revamped their web site and Overdrive now seems to be integrated to offer a seamless eBook checkout. Next to the Pocket integration that would be my second most appreciated feature. Pocket on my Aura HD is saving reams of paper for me.
I am very happy Micosoft provided a fix so quickly. The thought of waiting until mid to late September was giving me indigestion. It really caught me by surprise.

Hi, Dana. The OverDrive integration will be only in the Aura One at first. But I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t show up elsewhere in time. BTW, I fixed those typos. No problem–we all make them. David

An interesting follow up to this is that now when I plug my Kindle in to my Windows 10 laptop I get the blue screen of death. I did some googling and found a work around on Microft’s Windows forum. If I put the computer to sleep, plug in the Kindle and then wake the computer up it’s fine.
A microsoft rep on the forum said they’re aware of it and working on it.

@Barry: Big thanks for the tip! Shame on Microsoft. Oh, well. At least it isn’t discriminating against Kobo. With Amazon involved, it’s clear that Microsoft is an equal opportunity source of hassles. 😉

Hi, Dana. Kobo pushed out not only a firmware update for the Aura One but also a new desktop app, which could pick up files from the reader. Works fine here. What’s more, I could use Digital Editions on my PC to authorize the Aura One for Adobe DRM. On top of everything else, Calibre has been updated for the Aura One and, if I’m not mistaken–I haven’t checked–can even handle collections there. David
