The best protection I’ve found for my Kindle Paperwhite is the Redpepper Kindle Paperwhite Case Cover Waterproof Dirtproof Snowproof Shockproof Box Hard Tablet Shell case.
And, yes, you can also buy shock-proof, waterproof third-party cases for the Kindle Oasis. Do any hold the case-battery combo that the Oasis comes with? I’m not sure. Third-party cases can’t include the factory-provided extra battery, built into Amazon’s case. You’ll sacrifice battery life.
Now what about the new Kobo Aura One (review here)—I fear for its beautiful 7.8 inch E Ink screen. I don’t want a sleeve or sleep cover. I want a real case, ideally shock proof (the One itself is already water proof). Anything out there yet? Meanwhile, for $9, I’ve bought the RBEIK Kobo Aura ONE Screen Protector Glass, not as good as a whole case but better than nothing.
So what are your own thoughts on protection for the Aura One and other ereaders—either what exists now or what should exist?

I have two covers for my Kindle Voyage.
The first is an Oberon Design leather cover for day to day use. It’s not waterproof, but it’s think and sturdy to protect against drops or other average mishaps. I never going to take a bath or shower with my Kindle, so I’m not too worried about water damage. The downside for some people may be it is heaviness, but I kind of like the feel of heft and substance.
I have a triple sealed clear plastic sack I use when I take the Kindle to the beach. It has no protection against drop or bumps – it is really limited to the beach where I’m more concerned with sand than anything else.

I use a Cocoon Grid-It! sleeve for my Aura H2O to protect it from bangs/scratches while on the road. It holds cables and other tidbits in the grid part.

I have a Thankscase folio canvas cover on my Paperwhite 3. It snaps shut and is very secure. When I take my Kindle out of the house, it goes into a Moko neoprene zip bag with carry handles. Protection overkill, but I like it.

Noticed how 3rd-party cases for the Paperwhite & others have been disappearing from Amazon? With all of the tens/hundreds of thousands of ereaders sold, all that remains are a *few* covers with a smattering of reviews and … yep … you guessed it … Amazon’s hugely overpriced alternatives.
You can still buy 3rd-party covers on EBay but not on Amazon. Interesting, isn’t it?

Huh? A search for “Paperwhite case” on Amazon yields dozens and dozens of third party options. The first page of results alone has 11 third party cases vs 3 Amazon cases.

@BDR: Ouch. If you’re right, then maybe this is yet other fodder for antitrust investigators. Meanwhile that’s a useful tip–reminding cover shoppers of the eBay alternative.
