This morning, I found that my Fire HD 8 had downloaded its latest OS patch, to FireOS version 5.6.2.0—the one that brings with it the new “Show Mode” that you can use if the tablet is plugged in. But one other thing it brought with it was an “Alexa Accessories” notification icon that doesn’t do anything when I tap on it—but won’t go away. As someone who prefers only to see notifications that actually mean something, I found that more than a little annoying.
Someone in a Reddit thread had the same issue when they updated to the latest version of Alexa on their Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2, but was able to get it to go away by uninstalling and reinstalling Alexa. However, that’s not an option on the Fire, which counts Alexa as one of its non-removable shovelware apps. So what to do?
I tried “Force Stop” on the Alexa app, and that works for a while—but the next time you run Alexa, the notification icon returns. And if Alexa is stopped, you may not be able to use the services of Alexa as the Fire’s voice-command assistant.
Then I hit on something that seems to work, at least so far. I long-pressed on the “Alexa Accessories” notification until the “i” in a circle appeared, denoting the notification’s info settings. I opened those settings, switched on the “Block” option to block notifications, then switched it off again. The notification disappeared and stayed gone (at least until I force-stopped and relaunched Alexa again, or restarted the tablet). (That’s using the Google Now launcher that I worked out how to install the other day, but I gather from one of the comments in that Reddit thread it also works with the Fire’s “Home” launcher; you just deselect and reselect “Show Notifications.)
You could, of course, just leave the notifications off altogether, but that would mean you wouldn’t get any notifications from Alexa, and there may be some worthwhile ones—I’m not sure yet.
So far, that seems to be the most effective workaround I’ve found to get rid of that obnoxious notification icon. It’s not a perfect solution, as the icon will come back when the app or tablet is restarted, but at least it’s easy to do.
Hopefully Amazon will patch Alexa to fix the problem. Has anyone found any other solutions that work?
Update: On Amazon’s Kindle forums, an Amazon representative says they are aware of the issue and are working on a fix.

The same thing had happened to me with my Samsung galaxy phone that had an alexa app installed on it. Once things updated I have an un-clearable push notice on my phone which was driving me crazy. Following your lead work a slight detour, I pushed/held the notice until it changed colors and offer the “i” info. Then followed the “i” to the app info where I unchecked “show notifications”. This is working for me!

Right, disabling notifications altogether will certainly work, but it will also keep you from getting any other notifications from the app, which might include ones you might want. Switching notifications off and back on, where applicable, seems to remove the existing notification, without precluding the possibility of other notifications. (But you’d have to do it whenever you restarted the app, or rebooted the device.)

I have the same problem on my ZTE Max Duo (Z963VL). So it’s not, as some would think, a Samsung or Fire issue only. I emailed Amazon support with screenshots, but they were clueless. I too am waiting for an update at this point.

*UPDATE*. This from another site:
I had the same issue today on my Fire HD 8.
This issue occurred for me because I had also installed a 3rd party app store (Google Play), which also has its own listing for the Alexa app.
Once I had uninstalled the updates to the Alexa app through the Google Play Store, then re-updated using the inbuilt Amazon Apps store, the notification went away.
No need to prevent app notifications or force close any apps. Just use the correct preinstalled app store to update “system” apps!

Interesting. I’ll have to try that and see if it works.
Of course, given that the auto-update function of Google Play will automatically update every app it handles, whether it was installed through Google or not, the process will repeat itself any time there’s a new update to Alexa.

That’s not necessarily true. I have a Kindle Fire HD 10 inch. I don’t have any app stores besides the default. I don’t even have a ton of extra apps as I mostly read and browse the internet with my fire.
Installing it with the default installer may have fixed it for you but it keeps popping up for me and I don’t even use Alexa.
It’s an issue on Amazon’s end not because of anything that users have done “wrong”.

How exactly did you install Google Play Services? I’ve been trying but I can’t figure it out.

It has nothing to do with Google play option. I do not have Google play, just a factory fresh HD10 and that Alexa notification icon is still stuck there!

It can’t be the Google Play version thing – my (stock) Fire HD8 has the notification, and I’ve never installed any Google Play anything on it.

I had this problem too
I’ve never used alex a even i didn’t even know it worked on my tablet. So the solution to hold the notification until it turns blue and then turn off notifications worked for me. Thanks.
Amazon messed up
That’s what I get for trying to save money i guess…

On my kindle under notification you can choose to block notification s from each app individually. I did that for Alexa and it took care of the problem.
